On June 16, 1838, at Camp Hetzel near Cleveland, Tennessee, Evan Jones wrote that nearly all Cherokees were prisoners after being dragged from their houses and encamped at forts and military posts across the nation. Among those held prisoner there were Jesse Bushyhead and his family, Rev. Stephen Foreman, a native missionary of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions, the speaker of the national council, and several respected men and their families. Jones, a Baptist missionary to the Cherokee for fifty years, traveled with the Cherokee to Indian Territory during removal and served as assistant conductor of the Situwakee detachment.
