Tidence Lane was pastor of Buffalo Ridge Baptist Church in Washington County, the first church in Tennessee, in 1778. He also organized Bent Creek, now Whitesburg Baptist Church, in 1785 and was first moderator of the Holston Association, the first Baptist Association, in 1786. He and six of his sons fought in the Revolutionary War.
