Edwin Clifton and his wife Nancy Folks Clifton are buried in the old cemetery on a hillside above Hwy. 12, opposite the spring used by early members when their meeting house stood nearby. Many graves there are unmarked, but Edwin’s father, Samuel Albert Clifton, has a stone marker with dates of 10-6-1743 and 5-19-1834. Samuel outlived Edwin, who died in 1826 at age 62, and Nancy, born 11-14-1772, died at age 68 in 1840. Their children born in Halifax Co., N.C., were Samuel, who died in infancy; Martha, born about 1796, who married a Mr. James; Wm., born 1793; Lemuel Kirby 2nd, born 1801; Mary, born about 1803, who married Joseph Smith; and Benj. Mince, born 1804. Other children were born near this spot in their early Tennessee home on Half Pone Creek: James Mallory, born 1810; Hester Ann, born about 1812, who married Mr. Rogers; Isaac, born about 1815; Rebecca, born about 1817, who married Miles Harris; Edward Lindsey, born about 1818; and Joseph John, born about 1819. In Halifax Co., N.C., Edwin and Nancy’s home consisted of two adjoining tracts bordering Great or Deep Creek, one of 558 acres bought from John Sledge and one of 147 acres bought from Edward Elms. On Nov. 16, 1803, Edwin and Nancy deeded one acre on the bank of Great or Deep Creek to trustees Sandford Wilson, Lark Dawson, James Mallory, James Wilson, Willis Johnston, Joshua Vaughan, Edwin Clifton, and their successors for the building of a Methodist meeting house, with the deed witnessed by Lemuel K. Clifton and Jon DeBerry. In 1812, Clifton’s Meeting House stood on this acre. The relationship between this meeting house and New Hope Methodist Church is unknown, but in 1804 Edwin Clifton was listed as a trustee of New Hope with Benj. Nevell, Davis Bagby, Richard Spann, and Larkin Donon for another one-acre tract on the south side of the road in Halifax County. Samuel A. Clifton and Susanna Kirby were married in Nottoway Par., Southampton Co., Va., on Oct. 5, 1763. A complete list of their children is not available, but it may have included, besides Edwin and Lemuel Kirby, Peter Clifton in Bertie Co., N.C., in 1787. Susanna is believed to have died before Samuel followed Edwin to Montgomery Co., TN., possibly before 1811, when Samuel is proven to have been living in Tennessee. Earlier Halifax County court records and land transfers show dealings from Lemuel Kirby Clifton to his brother Edwin beginning in 1805, signed by their father Samuel and registered in 1808.
