Pattison State Park, a 1,436-acre park on Wisconsin’s Black River south of Superior, is known for Big Manitou Falls, the state’s highest waterfall, and nearby Little Manitou Falls. The park exists largely because Martin Pattison, an early lumberman and miner, bought riverfront land in 1917 to prevent a proposed power dam from destroying Big Manitou Falls, then donated it to the state in 1918. Dedicated in 1920, it was greatly expanded in 1935 when Civilian Conservation Corps crews built stone facilities, altered the landscape around Interfalls Lake, and created trails. Today it remains both a scenic conservation landscape and a popular recreation area.
