Founded by George S. Park in 1838, Parkville was first known as English Landing, a frontier river port and steamboat landing that also served as a market for slaves, tobacco, and hemp. It became the home of Park College, founded in 1875, where John A. McAfee and George S. Park pioneered a new pattern of education under the motto "Fides et Labor."
