Goodnow Mountain, a 2,664-foot peak in New York’s Adirondacks, is closely tied to the region’s history of forest conservation and fire detection. Named for Sylvester Goodnow, who settled at its base in the 1820s, the mountain later became part of a large Huntington family property donated to the State University of New York in 1932. Chosen in 1921 for a fire observation station, it received a steel fire tower and cabin built in 1922. Fire watching continued until 1979. The restored tower near the summit is open to the public and is listed on the National Historic Lookout Register.
