In 1758, at the height of the French and Indian War, British General John Forbes and his troops undertook the daunting task of carving a trail more than 300 miles long through the Pennsylvania backcountry and taking French Fort Duquesne at the Forks of the Ohio River, following a route linked with Philadelphia, Carlisle, Bedford, Ligonier, and Pittsburgh.
