Dorsie M. Pinnell was a descendant of a Virginian who fought in the American Revolution. He came to Texas at 17 for his health, served from 1898 to 1899 in the Spanish-American War in Company K, 1st Texas Infantry Volunteer Regiment, later took up ranching in Andrews County, and married Jessie Whitten, with whom he had 4 sons.
