Letchworth State Park in western New York follows the Genesee River through a deep, relatively young gorge centered on Portage Canyon, where the Upper, Middle, and Lower Falls helped earn it the name Grand Canyon of the East. Long part of the Seneca homeland known as Sehgahunda, it was shaped into a protected public landscape after William Pryor Letchworth began acquiring land in 1859 and donated his estate and surrounding acreage to New York in 1906. The park preserves striking geology, waterfalls, historic railroad works, the Glen Iris Inn, Mary Jemison’s burial site, museums, flood-control history at Mount Morris Dam, and extensive recreation.
