Built by Father Sorin in 1843, Old College was the cradle of the University of Notre Dame. Originally intended as a community house, it served for two years as a temporary college. From 1845-1854 it was the residence of Sisters of the Holy Cross, and it was subsequently used as a college bakery. In 1880 it became the home of the lay Brothers in charge of the university farm. After a thorough renovation, it formally opened on March 19, 1906, as a house of studies for the Teaching Brothers of the Holy Cross, and in 1912 it became the headquarters of the Holy Cross Mission Band.
