Indian troubles continually plagued the Texas frontier during the Civil War, causing great loss of life and property. One of the most serious raids occurred near here on Oct. 13, 1864, at Fitzpatrick Ranch, where Comanches killed seven ranch people and five Confederate soldiers, kidnapped six women and children, and stole 10,000 cattle. Brit Johnson, a Negro slave who lost his whole family that day, later joined the Comanches, gained their confidence, and freed his people. Later Indians punished him with mutilation and death.
