Ward's Point at Tottenville on Staten Island is New York State's southernmost point, where Arthur Kill meets Raritan Bay, and it is also one of the region's most important archaeological landscapes. The Ward's Point Conservation Area includes nine contributing sites and preserves evidence of prehistoric and historic Indigenous settlement and subsistence on Staten Island. Archaeological importance here extends back about 8,000 years, making it one of the largest and best preserved places for studying Native American life in the New York area. Burial Ridge, used by the Lenape from the Woodland period until Staten Island was relinquished to the Dutch, is New York City's largest pre-European burial ground.
