To support his philosophical and scientific endeavors, Henry David Thoreau worked as a surveyor to earn a living. He was well respected in Concord for his surveying work, and his results have stood the test of time. As he surveyed, he took careful note of the natural world and incorporated his observations into his writing, as in his account of measuring along the Marlboro Road when a fine little blue-slate butterfly fluttered over the chain.
