General Burnside Island State Park is a 430-acre park on an island in Lake Cumberland south of Somerset, Kentucky, and is notable as the state’s only island state park. Known locally as Burnside Island, it takes its name from Union General Ambrose E. Burnside, who stationed troops there during the Civil War. Its significance joins that wartime association to a prominent reservoir setting. Today it serves mainly as a recreation destination, offering camping, a golf course, and boat access at the island’s south end. The golf course earned local recognition in 2009 as the Commonwealth Journal Readers Choice Award winner for Best Places to Play Golf and placed second the next year.
