On August 17, 1959, an earthquake sent huge waves rocking Hebgen Lake, swallowing cabins at Hilgard Lodge and sending Highway 287 sliding into the water. At the former lodge site, the remains of the resort and evidence of the waves reveal the sometimes hair-raising events of that day.
