Stingray Point Light, built in 1858 at the mouth of Virginia’s Rappahannock River, marked the entrance to Deltaville harbor just west of Stingray Point, a place named for the incident in which John Smith was stung while fishing nearby. Its history bears signs of Civil War disruption: in 1865, repairs were recorded after the light had been stripped of movable property, though the source of the damage is uncertain. The original lighthouse remained in use until 1965, when, after recent automation, it was removed and replaced by a skeleton tower on the old foundation. That light still serves, and a full-size replica also stands nearby.
