Chief Warrant Officer Two Scott Saboe served with Alpha Company, 4th Battalion, 101st Aviation Regiment, "The Comancheros," and took great pride in being an Army aviator and assault helicopter pilot. His dedication and technical proficiency as a warrant officer and Blackhawk helicopter pilot led to his selection as Command Flight Lead and Night Vision Goggle Unit Trainer, two of the toughest jobs in the battalion. He was responsible for technical planning and execution of air assaults, planned missions, flew the lead helicopter, and guided the rest to achieve successful missions. During Operation Iraqi Freedom, he planned, advised, and executed most of the company's flights. A quiet young man from Willow Lake, he became one of the best Blackhawk pilots of the 101st Airborne Division, trained newly assigned and less experienced pilots, and formed the backbone of the unit's skill level and mission success. He served as pilot in command and flight lead in the longest and largest air assault in the history of the United States Army, trained all soldiers in the use of night vision goggles, and was deeply valued by those who knew, loved, and flew with him. His first love was his son Dustin, and for good luck he flew with Dustin's dinosaur, a picture of Dustin and himself, and a picture of his father Arlo, a Vietnam veteran. He died at age 33 doing what he loved, flying. The account also honors veterans past, present, and future, emphasizing that since the Revolutionary War young men and women have defended the country with pride and honor, formed deep bonds of friendship and comradeship through service, sacrificed for the nation's freedom, and deserve to be remembered, honored, and taught about by future generations.
