Phoebe Ann Mosey, later known as Annie Oakley, was born six miles northeast of here in what was then Woodland, later renamed Willowdell. Born in 1860, she was the sixth daughter of Jacob and Susan Mosey. After her father died, she shot wild game to help feed her family. A child prodigy with a gun, she won match after match and in 1881 defeated champion shooter Frank Butler in a life-changing contest. She married Butler in Windsor, Ontario, in 1882. Using the professional name Annie Oakley, she amazed audiences across the Midwest with her accuracy. In 1884, Sioux Chief Sitting Bull, impressed by her skill, adopted her as his daughter and gave her the name "Little Sure Shot." After joining Buffalo Bill’s Wild West in 1865, she became a star performer who thrilled audiences, including royalty and nobility in England and Europe. She retired from the Wild West in 1901, then shot mainly for recreation and charity events, donating money to orphanages and disadvantaged widows. After several months of ill health, she died in Greenville at age 66.
