James Buchanan Gillett was a very famous Texas Ranger, born in Austin as the son of the Adjutant General of Texas. At 16 he became a cowboy on the western frontier, and at 19 he joined the Rangers, hunting down raiding Indians, rustlers, and feuding settlers. After serving from 1875 to 1881, he became El Paso city marshal. He then ranched for 41 years in far West Texas, living in and near Marfa, and in New Mexico. His book, "Six Years with the Texas Rangers", is read as an Old West classic.
