Army routine was believed to promote discipline, and soldiers spent six days a week on duty from daybreak to dusk in a garrison life of roll calls, inspections, parades, guard duty, weapons training, drills, and daily chores called fatigues. Each call, inspection, drill, or fatigue was preceded by a distinct piece of music; for example, "Molly Put the Kettle On" signaled breakfast. Soldiers were kept so busy working as carpenters, blacksmiths, construction workers, farmers, and woodcutters that officers lamented having limited opportunities to drill and train them in military duties. Private Samuel Bloomer, who lived in the barracks here in 1861, recalled a day of chores in which after breakfast the men cleaned out their quarters, carried their bedding onto the parade ground to air in the sun, brushed down the walls, and thoroughly washed the woodwork, windows, and floors, leaving no drills that day except dress parade at sundown.
