The University of Tennessee Arboretum in Oak Ridge is a 250-acre public research and educational landscape operated by the University of Tennessee Agricultural Experiment Station. Blending the atmosphere of a garden with the purpose of a working study collection, it contains about 2,500 native and exotic woody plant specimens representing roughly 800 species, varieties, and cultivars. Its notable strengths include azaleas, conifers, dogwoods, magnolias, oaks, and rhododendrons. The grounds are organized by both plant type and geography, with sections reflecting regions from the Cumberland River gorge and southern coastal plains to California, central China, and Poland, while four nature trails extend its teaching mission.
