The Lavender Pit is an open pit mine named in honor of Harrison M. Lavender, 1890–1952, who as vice president and general manager of Phelps Dodge Corporation conceived and carried out a plan for making the area's previously unprofitable low-grade copper-bearing rock into commercial copper-producing ore. His dynamic leadership and comprehensive knowledge of all phases of mining continued to inspire his fellow engineers.
