Established by the University of Alberta in 1959 on donated land west of Edmonton, this botanical garden and arboretum is Alberta’s largest, set on a landscape shaped by the ancient shoreline of pre-glacial Lake Edmonton. Originally a botanic garden and field laboratory, it was heavily damaged by flooding in the 1970s, then rebuilt and expanded with support from the Devonian Foundation and Friends of the Garden. Renamed in 2017, it includes developed gardens, natural areas, major features such as the Aga Khan Garden, and specialized collections and showhouses. It serves both as a public destination and as a university center for research, conservation, teaching, and environmental education.
