Old Michigan City Light in Washington Park, Michigan City, Indiana, is a decommissioned lighthouse that reflects the harbor’s long importance on Lake Michigan. Its site was first marked by a brick-and-stone light in 1837, and the present tower was built in 1858 as the second light there, costing $8,000. After the pier was extended in 1904, its lantern, lens, and light were transferred to the new Michigan City East Light and the older tower was remodeled. Between 1837 and 1940, seven keepers and fourteen assistants served at the station. One of only about a dozen Indiana lighthouses, it survives as a historic landmark and seasonal museum.
