The Transfer House, known as the Grand Old Lady of Decatur architectural heritage, is a major city landmark and the official symbol of the city. Originally located in downtown's Lincoln Square, the unique structure was built in 1895 to serve as the main transportation center for transferring trolley, interurban and bus passengers around the community. From 1895 until the early 1970's, it served as a transportation center. Its dramatic move to Central Park helped refocus its main purpose as a center for major community gatherings and band concerts, and its location in the heart of the city became an ideal setting for visiting dignitaries and old friends to meet and communicate.
