War of 1812 hero Leonard Covington was born at nearby Covington Farm, Aquasco. He served in the Maryland Senate in 1802 and from 1807 to 1809, and in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1805 to 1807. Mortally wounded on November 11, 1813, at the Battle of Crysler's Farm, Ontario, he was buried at Sackets Harbor, New York. More than twenty-one American cities, towns, and counties were named for him, including Fort Covington, Baltimore, which protected the flank of Fort McHenry.
