Founded in 1971, the Alton Museum of History and Art is a nonprofit local history museum in Alton, Illinois, housed in Loomis Hall on the former Rock Spring Alton Baptist Seminary campus. Built around 1820 as the seminary’s original chapel and classroom building, Loomis Hall is associated with John Mason Peck, has Underground Railroad ties, and is recognized as the second oldest remaining college building in Illinois. The museum is especially known for artifacts related to Robert Wadlow, the “Alton Giant,” while also interpreting regional history, Native American populations, and local artistic achievements. It temporarily closed in 2020 and remained closed as of 2024.
