West Virginia State University began in 1891 as the West Virginia Colored Institute, the first public black college in the state. In 1915 it became the West Virginia Collegiate Institute, and in 1927 it was the first fully accredited black land-grant college in the US. In 1929 it became West Virginia State College, was integrated in 1954, and was named West Virginia State University in 2004.
