Near Ulm, Montana, First Peoples Buffalo Jump State Park preserves the Ulm Pishkun, a long sandstone cliff used by Native peoples of the northern Plains for communal bison hunts. Archaeological evidence shows the jump was in use by about 500 CE, with especially heavy use from around 900 to 1700, before horse-mounted hunting changed older methods. Hunters used drive lines, dogs, and sometimes buffalo runners to force herds over the edge, where the animals were butchered and fully used. Linked to many tribes, the site contains a deep bone bed from at least 6,000 bison and remains one of Montana’s few protected buffalo jumps despite later quarrying and bone removal.
