Grand Island North Light stands on the north end of Grand Island near Munising in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, high on a 175-foot cliff above Lake Superior. Planned as shipping increased after the opening of the Soo Locks, the first lighthouse there was built in 1856 but soon deteriorated because of poor materials. Congress funded a replacement, and the present brick station was erected in 1867 from standard U.S. Lighthouse Establishment plans, with a keeper’s dwelling, tower, and service buildings that still retain much of their 19th-century appearance. Automated in 1941 and decommissioned in 1961, it was later restored and survives as a private summer home.
