Imbler Church, built in 1878, was originally located two miles south of town and was moved to its present location sometime between 1902 and 1910 by inching it across the land with a cable powered by a gear-driven drum turned by a single horse. For its first 24 years, it served two separate congregations, the Southern Methodists and the Cambellites, later the Church of Christ, which held services on alternate Sundays. After 1920, the building was used by visiting ministries and for Methodist Sunday School, where the superintendent arrived early each Sunday morning to start the wood stove and ring the bell before an opening hymn and the pulling of curtains to divide the single room into four classrooms. In 2003, Veytha Irene Ruckman Berry donated the building to the Union County Historical Society, which, together with the community of Imbler, has worked to restore this piece of pioneer history. The church’s original bell, once used to call worshippers to services, had disappeared by the time restoration began but was found at another site and returned to Imbler through a trade.
