In the early 1950's, at age 76, John Sandula built this clock by copying from memory the housing and works of a 156 year old Hungarian cathedral clock. It differed from its European counterpart only in the figures that struck the bells, which Sandula chose as George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. The bells came from the First United Methodist Church of Durand, built in 1869. The clock originally stood atop the Simplicity Engineering Manufacturing complex on Oak Street, and a miniature replica also built by John Sandula is in the museum at the base of the tower.
