Second, Fifth and Sixth Corps, Lockwood's Brigade from the Middle Department, the First and Third Brigades of the Second Cavalry Division, the Third Cavalry Division, and the Artillery Reserve reached the field of Gettysburg. The First and Second Brigades of the First Cavalry Division marched from Gettysburg to Taneytown, and Merritt's Reserve Brigade of the First Cavalry Division marched from Mechanicsburg to Emmitsburg. These movements coincided with the second day of the Battle of Gettysburg and with skirmishes at Hunterstown and near Chambersburg, Pennsylvania.
