Near Rice, Virginia, this state park preserves part of the Sayler's Creek Battlefield, scene of the Battle of Sayler's Creek on April 6, 1865, one of the last major engagements in the Eastern Theater of the Civil War. Fought during Robert E. Lee's retreat from Richmond and Petersburg in the Appomattox campaign, and only three days before his surrender at Appomattox Court House, the battle became a decisive moment in the collapse of Lee's army and the war's final days. The park also includes the historic Hillsman House, used as a field hospital during and after the fighting, directly reflecting the battle's human cost.
