U.S. Grant, general-in-chief of the Armies of the United States, eighteenth president and the first native Ohioan elected chief executive, lived in this house from 1824 to 1839. His father, Jesse R. Grant, built the original part facing Water Street in 1824 and later added a section facing Main Cross Street, now Grant Avenue. Grant recalled that it remained his home until, at age seventeen in 1839, he left for West Point.
