Paul Bunyan's Boat-Anchor
Lore
2
Legend holds that Paul Bunyan did much of his fishing in Minnesota and created more than a few of its ten thousand lakes. Big Stone Lake, visible to the northwest and the state's 10th largest, was one of his favorite fishing places because of the variety and size of its fish and because he found there a stone heavy enough to anchor his mammoth boat. Roughly squared from the region's famous granite, the stone weighed 110 tons. This legendary boat-anchor was rediscovered in 1958, on the eve of Minnesota's Statehood Centennial, about 2 miles from the foot of the lake and was hoisted to a hilltop site as a memento of the state's 100th birthday.
