Shrine of the Pines, south of Baldwin, Michigan, preserves Raymond W. Overholzer’s remarkable collection of early 20th-century American craft furniture in the original log cabin gallery built in 1939. After moving to the Marlborough area in 1920 during the height of northern Michigan logging, Overholzer began transforming white pine roots and stump wood from the cutover landscape into furniture and sculptural objects, using hand tools and highly improvised materials. Over nearly 30 years he created 201 pieces, turning the remains of eastern white pine into a memorial to a lost natural resource. The cabin and collection became a Michigan State Historic Site in 1982.
