At Resaca de la Palma, a battle that lasted less than two hours left hundreds of wounded men from the United States and Mexican armies lying side by side in the tangled undergrowth, crying out for help and pleading for water. Sergeant Edward Milton, weakened by his wound, fell back exhausted and was comforted by a wounded Mexican who called out to him, and both men were later lifted by Milton’s comrades and survived to fight again. Private Barna Upton recalled gathering the wounded, friend and foe alike, on the bank of the pond and turning away in tears at their heart-rending groans. The fierce afternoon fighting cost the lives of 45 United States soldiers and 158 Mexican soldiers.
