Two men, John and William Driscoll, father and son, were tried by 500 aroused citizens and then executed by a firing squad of 111 men on June 29, 1841, at a site 200 yards north of here. Doctors and scholars, ministers and deacons regarded this terrible example of lynch law as a public necessity.
