Fossilized tree stumps found in rock above coal seams are referred to as kettle bottoms. When coal is removed, kettle bottoms like this one fall into the mine entry. This fossil is approximately 300 million years old and dates to the Pennsylvanian Age. It was found in the No. 2 Gas coal seam in Kanawha County near United, WV, in 1924, where the mine was operated by Cabin Creek Consolidated Coal Company. It was donated to the College of Mineral and Energy Resources by Beth Energy in 1991.
