In honor and memory of all those who have defended freedom wearing Old Hickory since 1917, the 30th Infantry Division and 30th Armored Brigade Combat Team served in World War I on the Western Front in the Somme Offensive, Ypres-Lys, and Flanders 1918; in World War II in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes-Alsace, and Central Europe; and in Operation Iraqi Freedom in the phases Transition of Iraq in 2004, Iraqi Governance in 2005, National Resolution in 2005, and Iraqi Sovereignty in 2009. Col. Sla Marshall called the 30th "the outstanding infantry division in the ETO" on 16 March 1946, and Gen Raymond T. Odierno said on 29 January 2010, "You have brought a measure of stability to a people plagued by conflict, and have made your nation proud."
