Abraham Lincoln is remembered in words from the Gettysburg Address calling for a high resolve that the dead shall not have died in vain, that the nation under God shall have a new birth of freedom, and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth. He is also honored in memory of the Union soldiers and sailors and as their beloved Commander-in-Chief and noblest friend, with his life spanning 1809 to 1865 and the war years marked as 1861 to 1865.
