A large and vibrant pueblo once stood against this cliff face near Montezuma Castle. Archeologists named it Castle A, and because Montezuma Castle suffered extensive looting, much of what is known about life here, including what people ate, what they made, who they traded with, and when they lived, comes from excavations at this site. The pueblo had about 45 rooms arranged in multiple levels, with beam sockets carved into the cliff showing the floor levels and the roofline of the fifth and highest story. Archeologists excavated the site in the 1930s, removed rubble, and reconstructed the lower rooms. They determined that the pueblo had burned and then fallen away from the cliff. A 1930s reconstruction of what a room here might have looked like was later removed in the 1970s because of safety concerns.
