In 1900, Carlos Nelson Boynton built a 1200 acre ranch west of Truman, Minnesota, on land he purchased from the railroad. Boynton owned the Boynton Land Company of St. Paul, Minnesota, and held one million acres of land in North Dakota alone, along with land in other states. Although he lived in St. Paul, he frequently visited the ranch, where he built a very large barn for the harness horses he bred, raced, and sold, as well as a one mile race track just northwest of the barn. The famous trotter Dan Patch spent some time at the ranch, and old timers recalled Sunday races held at the track. Carlos and Katherine Boynton are buried at Riverside Cemetery at Madella, Minnesota.
