Middleway Historic District is a village located at the heart of significant travel crossroads, equidistant between Charles Town and Bunker Hill, as well as between Martinsburg and Shepherdstown to the north and Winchester and Berryville to the south. Known historically as Smithfield or Clip, its origins lie in Native American trails that navigated the area, utilizing the natural guidance provided by the flows of rivers, valleys, and gaps of the Blue Ridge and Allegheny Mountains. The community's positioning at these crossroads led to its development and historical significance as it facilitated movement and interaction among various cultural and economic centers in the region.
