In Minneapolis’s North Loop, the James J. Fiorentino Museum occupies a former industrial warehouse and houses a large private collection of handcrafted cuckoo clocks assembled by inventor and garage door business owner James Fiorentino. Beginning in the 1970s, he gathered clocks largely from within about 200 miles of Minnesota, drawn especially to the carved appearance of traditional Black Forest examples rather than technical clockmaking history. The museum displays more than 300 cuckoo clocks, mostly from the 19th century, with over 100 in working order, alongside phonographs, vintage musical instruments, and geologic specimens. Opened to the public in 2021 after Fiorentino’s death in 2017, it fulfills his goal of creating a free public museum from his collection.
