Tybee National Wildlife Refuge is a 100-acre sanctuary at the mouth of the Savannah River in South Carolina, established in 1938 as a breeding area for migratory birds and other wildlife. It developed from Oysterbed Island, a 1-acre oyster shoal reshaped by U.S. Army Corps of Engineers spoil disposal from harbor dredging, leaving much of it covered in sand. More stable ground now supports eastern red cedar, wax myrtle, and groundsel, with salt marsh along parts of the shore. The refuge serves as an important resting, feeding, and nesting site for coastal birds and is widely observed from Fort Pulaski across the river.
