Douglas MacArthur was one of only five American five-star generals. His leadership in the Pacific helped ensure Allied victory, and he accepted Japan's unconditional surrender ending World War II. He is remembered for saying "I shall return!" to the Philippine people, and "Old soldiers never die — they just fade away."
