Baggage carts like this one were used by railroad lines throughout the United States and Europe to transfer luggage on and off trains for passengers. At that time, trains usually traveled at a maximum speed of about forty miles per hour. Ticket prices ranged from ten cents to one dollar for the average trip, while a cross-country excursion cost about $125 round-trip.
