Johnson Hall stood on this site after its construction in 1949 until it was razed in 2003. Originally a men's dormitory, it became the California Academic Leadership Hall in 1996, housing both male and female honor students. The building was named for Job Johnson, a lawyer and surveyor who was among the founders of the town of California.
